Story
Before she became a necromancer, Liliana was training to be a healer on her home plane of Dominaria. There, she dabbled in forbidden arts that lead her to inadvertently curse her brother, transforming him into an undead monster. In the battle that ensued, Liliana’s Planeswalker spark ignited, sending her to Innistrad, where she fully embraced her study of dark magic without guilt or fear of punishment.
Liliana hoped to reverse her brother’s transformation, but there was something more: she sought to avoid her own death, for she feared nothing more than joining her brother. She mastered necromancy from Innistrad’s experts, but as the years took their toll and a cure for her brother’s curse evaded her, she sought help from another source.
Four demons from across the Multiverse promised Liliana power beyond her dreams and centuries of ageless life in exchange for her servitude. As the fourth demon carved the terms of this demonic contract into her skin in glowing lines, she savored the new heights of her magical power, and mentally resolved to free herself from the demons’ control by any means necessary.
The magical Chain Veil gave Liliana the means she needed. Its phenomenal power allowed her to defeat her first demon, Kothophed. Then she returned to Innistrad to hunt down her second demon, Griselbrand. She sundered the Helvault, a demonic prison, in order to destroy him. Before she moved on to hunt her next demons, Liliana was determined to gain full control over the Chain Veil’s powerful and destructive magic.
When Jace Beleren first came to Innistrad asking for her assistance, she refused to abandon her studies. But when the threat of Emrakul threatened the entire plane, Liliana agreed to give her support to Jace and joined the Gatewatch knowing that its powerful Planeswalkers will be excellent allies in her ongoing mission to deal with her remaining demons.
