Standard format is often contrasted to Legacy format, a format including all card sets, or Block format, which includes selected card sets only.
On August 5, 2025, with 7.4.0, DMU, BRO, ONE, and MOM rotated out of Standard. Four more sets are normally added to Standard before the next rotation, but according to the MtG company Wizards of the Coast, the rotation following the late 2025 one will be delayed until early 2027. Thus, additional sets will be added before the rotation that removes WOE, LCI, MKM and OTJ. Oktagon confirmed, in 2023, that they would be following Wizards of the Coast in extending the Standard playability of cards to three years instead of two.  MID, VOW, NEO, and SNC will did not be rotating rotate out until 2024's 6.8.0, on August 13th, but presumably in the third quarter of the year, as before 2023.
When Dominaria United was released in October 2022, Standard format rotated, and the previously Standard sets Zendikar Rising, Kaldheim, Strixhaven, and Adventures in the Forgotten Realms became Legacy sets.
Before 2023
Rotation took place in the third quarter of the year. In short, sets rotated out after their second year, except as follows.
The Standard format changed according to the following rules, until 2023:
* New sets are were added to Standard until Standard contains contained Origins plus 8 main-line non-Origins card sets. Zendikar vs Eldrazi and Daxos vs Kalemne are not considered main-line card sets.* When the 9th non-Origins set (10 main-line Standard sets including Origins) is was added, the oldest group of four non-Origins Sets , and any non-mainline sets, are were removed from Standard.
