He has average health and deck limits which heavily favor Creatures, at the expense of Supports. Like all of the BFZ and Origins Planeswalkers, he has a low mana bonus total; at +7, it is as low as a tri-color PW. His red bonus is tied for highest in the game, though, with Jaya, Fiery Negotiator, and his abilities are quite powerful. As with most PWs released early on, he gains abilities at higher levels. For example, his second ability at level 12 instead of 10, and his third at 18 instead of 16.
His abilities revolve around red gems, including destroying non-red gems on the board, and creating a support Token which permanently buffs his creatures when red gems are matched. He can also temporarily give all his creatures Berserker and Trample , as well as a large buff to their Power.
In the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt event The Harvesttide, red Activate gems are added to the board by the Lycan Rage permanent support.
Koth of the Hammer is the first of two Planeswalkers in MtGPQ to embody Koth at different points in his life story. Although Koth of the Hammer was released with the Battle for Zendikar set, his story is set in Mirrodin, a MtG setting introduced more than a decade before the release of Puzzle Quest, and it is only his avatar released seven years later, Koth, Fire of Resistance, whose homeland and story is directly connected to his concurrent set.

Story
This red mage specializes in geomancy: spells that move mountains, shatter stone, and melt iron. His earth magic also allows him to purify metal, a reflection of Koth’s deep desire to bring peace and harmony to his people.
Koth is a Vulshok from the Hammer tribe, who dwell in the Oxidda chain of mountains on the plane of Mirrodin. His Planeswalker spark ignited when the tribes of his once-peaceful people fell into open war for the first time in generations. The metal his people mined from the mountains of Oxidda became strangely corrupted, turning their forged ingots brittle and inconsistent. Each tribe blamed the others, and old hatreds began to reemerge.
Believing he could use his ability to purify the ore, Koth committed himself to the task of restoring the precious metal and reuniting his people. Wise beyond his years, this passionate leader values counsel before rushing headlong into action. But if action is required, Koth is a decisive man of few words. He can—and will—bring a mountain down on anyone who dares threaten his home.
In fact, Koth battled the Phyrexians, who took over his plane, and he now serves as the leader of a resistance.
