Overview
Each Planeswalker in a player's collection has a Level, which determines the stats and abilities of the Planeswalker. Newly acquired Planeswalkers begin at level 1, and may be raised to a maximum of level 60. The higher the level, the more powerful the Planeswalker.
Mana bonuses
Mana bonuses are the bonus mana gained when matching gems of a particular color.
Mana bonuses steadily increase from an average of around -1 to 0 (typically -0.3) at level 1, to an average of around +1 to +2 (typically +1.5) at level 60.
Some Planeswalkers have extreme differences between their strongest and weakest mana bonuses, such as Elspeth, Sun's Champion.
Others, such as Kiora, Master of the Depths maintain a more balanced set of mana bonuses.
Deck restrictions
Deck restrictions are the maximum number of Creature (), Spell (), and Support () cards which may be added to a deck of a given Planeswalker.
At level 1, most Planeswalkers have a fixed number of cards of each type. Deck flexibility increases steadily with level, and at level 60, significant scope for changing card types is usually provided, with most planeswalkers allowing at least 5 of any given card type to be included in a deck.
Origins Planeswalkers are notable for having particularly flexible deck restrictions. For example, Liliana, Defiant Necromancer has restrictions of 9, 10, and 8 at level 60.
Health
The higher a Planeswalker's health, the more damage they can take before losing the game.
At level 1, a typical Planeswalker's health is around 30, but can be as low as 15 or as high as 62. At level 60, health is typically 110, but can be as low as 82, or as high as 135.
Unlike mana bonuses and deck restrictions, health typically increases at a faster rate the higher level the planeswalker is, rather than increasing steadily with level.
Abilities
Planeswalkers have three different abilities which may be activated using Loyalty accumulated during the game, to perform special, sometimes game-changing effects.
No abilities are available at level 1, but they become unlocked at an early level. All abilities are available at the maximum ability level (4) at planeswalker level 60. Typically, the highest ability levels only become available in the highest few Planeswalker levels.
Leveling costs
Leveling planeswalkers costs large amounts of Mana Runes. Higher levels cost increasingly more Runes. Leveling costs are also highly dependent on the number of colors the Planeswalker has affinity to.
