Origins is the first Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest set, and was the only existing set at the time of the game's public release in December 2015, in version 1.2 of the game. The set abbreviation is ORI, and the set icon () resembles a five-pointed rising sun.
Origins, along with Puzzle Masters, will always remain a Standard format set.
Planeswalkers
Its Planeswalkers: Chandra, Roaring Flame (C1), Gideon, Battle Forged (G1), Jace, Telepath Unbound (J1), Liliana, Defiant Necromancer (L1), and Nissa, Sage Animist (N1) are always available in the Vault (with the exception of Nissa, with whom the player starts), and an affordable alternative for new players, but were designed to be weaker than all other Planeswalkers released later. Their abilities are mostly strong, but their mana bonuses are +5 in total, which is 4 points lower than other mono colored walkers at +9, making them slow going, if not a challenge, to play in most events.
Abilities
- See Abilities
As might be expected from the first set, Origins introduced more abilities than any other set.
Basic Evergreen
All the Basic Evergreen abilities, although that term was not introduced until Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths:
- Berserker
- Deathtouch
- Double Strike
- First Strike
- Flying
- Hexproof
- Lifelink
- Menace
- Reach
- Trample
- Vigilance
Other abilities
When Prevent Damage was introduced, it acted like an infinite supply of Shield Counter , preventing Destruction as well as damage. Against PD creatures there was only Return to hand, Weaken, or other forms of Non-targeted removal, as there were no cards that Exiled (despite Hixus, Prison Warden using the Exile term).
- Can't Attack
- Countdown gems
- Disabled
- Trap
- Haste
- Legendary
- Prevent Damage : Its icon was not shown until Battle for Zendikar. No Origins creatures have Prevent Damage; it is granted by Spells and a Support.
- Regenerate
- Unblockable : Its icon was not shown until BFZ
Cards
Origins is the largest card set, consisting of 246 cards across all rarities except Masterpiece.
