Return of the God-Pharaoh is a Legacy PvE Coalition event with a long history, including having its objectives changed in 2018 and 2023. It was introduced in July 2017 with the Hour of Devastation set.

Because it is a PvE event, the opponents' deck lists are full of cards from Hour of Devastation and its plane of Amonkhet. A World Reborn, Avacyn's Madness, Battle of Four Tribes and The Elderspark are also both PvE and Coalition.

None of its objectives require cards from HOU. Elements from HOU, other than the cards and bosses themselves are present: Proven Combatant's ability affects Activated gems, one summons Zombies, and another buffs them once cast.

The 70 hour Avacyn's Madness will be the longest and most difficult event newer players have seen. Return of the God-Pharaoh is longer still: 96 hours, four days. Because it is a Boss Health event, it may, like Avacyn's Madness, end sooner.

It is also more dangerous to the unwary. Nicol Bolas, Node 3.3, is a good example. He can easily kill opponents in a very short number of turns, but plays almost entirely Spells and Spell-reliant Supports, most of which require a target: the player's creatures. It was always possible to play without creatures and make most of his deck and his Loyalty ability redundant, but he may be one of the easier bosses now because of Test of Talents.

RGP has three "wheel" nodes to AM's five. The points awarded on each "wheel" vary greatly just as AM's do: 15 points on the first and 60 on the last, compared with AM's 10 points on the first and 55 on the last. They are spread similarly, also, with the middle wheel on both being 15 points for the Win! objective in both events.

History

A more than five year old event, which diminished in frequency in its fourth and fifth year; it was scheduled to run three times each in 2019 and 2020, twice in 2021, and once in 2022, on the 4th of November. Currently seeing a resurgence, being run on the 10th of February, 2023, and the 27th of October, 2023.

Objectives have been changed twice; first in July 2018. In 2023, Puzzle Quest's new developers, Webcore, replaced some of the objectives for the near-Halloween running of this event.

The deck list for Node 1.1, The Sunset Pyramid, was incomplete for years. When originally compiled, a duplicate listing of Dunes of the Dead was overlooked. The correct card listing, Desert of the Fervent, was added before the November 2022 run.
