Overview
Standard is a card set format which includes Origins, plus between four and eight of the newest card sets.
Standard is often contrasted to Legacy, a format including all card sets. Legacy format is associated with the Legacy Ribbon (), while Standard format has no graphical symbol in the game.
Future Standard
Future Standard is a format consisting only of card sets which will remain in Standard after the next Standard rotation. The Ravnica at War series of events are Future Standard format events, and may become Standard events after the next Standard rotation.
How Standard changes
The card sets in Standard format match the Standard format of tabletop MtG, with the single difference of Origins always being in Standard. The Standard format changes according to the following rules:
- New sets are added to Standard until it reaches 8 non-Origins sets (9 sets total).
- When the 9th non-Origins set (10th set total) is added, the oldest four non-Origins Sets are removed from Standard.
When Throne of Eldraine (the set following M20) is added to MtGPQ, the following card sets are expected to rotate out of Standard: XLN, RIX, DOM, and M19.
In events
In a Standard Format event, decks must include only cards from Standard card sets. Standard events were introduced as a way of combating power creep, and lowering the barrier of entry for new players.
List of Standard format events
In decks
Any deck containing only Standard cards is a Standard deck, and may be played in Standard or Legacy events.
- A Standard format Deck shows no ribbon in the deck editor.
- A Legacy format Deck shows the Legacy Ribbon () with the deck.
In card sets
The following card sets are Standard card sets.
